Vein Surgery
Weston MedSurg Center offers a comprehensive array of services for the diagnosis and treatment of problematic
leg veins. Steven Weston, MD is actively involved in all vein procedures and is a board-certified surgeon. After
an initial complimentary consultation, a diagnostic ultrasound examination is often the next step in determining
which of our comprehensive treatment options would be most effective. Patients report little, if any pain or
downtime with any of these procedures. Weston MedSurg Center offers the following vein services:
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and “spider veins.” Sclerotherapy involves
an injection of a solution (generally sodium tetradecyl sulfate) directly into the vein. The solution irritates
the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel
turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure and has been in use since
the 1930s.
Laser therapy is a proven treatment for treating unsightly broken and dilated vessels as well as other unwanted
vascular lesions, such as rosacea, port wine stains and other vascular birthmarks. In fact, the latest advances in
laser technology have given us a method for removal that is safer, faster and more effective than any previous
treatment.
The Closure® Procedure is an advanced treatment for patients who have varicose veins and/or symptoms due to
venous reflux disease in one of the long, superficial leg veins. Using ultrasound, a tiny catheter is positioned
in the diseased vein and delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall, causing the collagen in the wall to
shrink and the vein to close. With the abnormal vein closed, blood is rerouted to other healthy veins. Patients
experience minimal discomfort, often taking a quick nap during the procedure, due to a special combination of
mild sedation along with topical and local anesthesia. With the source of the problem treated, symptoms cease
and any cosmetically unappealing surface veins can be effectively treated with microphlebectomy, sclerotherapy
or laser therapy.
