General Surgery
Weston MedSurg Center offers a wide variety of surgical procedures. These procedures are listed below:
Hernias
Men, women, and children of all ages can have hernias. A hernia is a weakness or tear in the wall of the
abdomen. Acquired hernias are caused by wear and tear over the years. Congenital hernias result from weakness
in the abdominal wall that is present at birth. Hernias may get worse or grow larger with time or physical
stress. Do you think you may have a hernia? If so, see Dr. Weston right away for a medical evaluation. If you
do have a hernia, you can discuss the benefits or options to surgical repair. It is usually better to have
surgery before the hernia gets bigger and complications arise. Don’t let a hernia limit what you do. Surgery
now can help prevent problems later on. Dr. Weston performs open and laparoscopic surgery for a variety of
cogenital, acquired, and recurrent hernias.
Gallbladder
Gallbladder problems can cause many distressing symptoms. Pain, heartburn, or upset stomach may have started
sometime after a meal. This pain can be due to gallstones or a diseased gallbladder. Because your symptoms are
likely to worsen if not treated, you should think about the options for relieving your pain. Dr. Weston may
order some tests, and then suggest a treatment plan that’s best for you. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can
remove your gallbladder through very small incisions. Dr. Weston has performed thousands of cholecystectomies
since 1989. Most patients go home the same day and recover in less than a week.
Breast Biopsy
Breast biopsies are performed to take a sample of breast tissue that can be studied under the microscope.
An open or stereotactic biopsy may be performed. During a stereotactic procedure, an x-ray helps find the
tissue to be removed. Open biopsy is done by taking a sample of tissue through an incision made in the skin.
A biopsy may be necessary due to an abnormal mammogram, a palpable lump, or skin changes/ nipple discharge.
Endoscopy
Acid reflux disease is a condition where stomach acid “backs up” into the esophagus. This acid can irritate
and even damage the lining of the esophagus and lead to heartburn. If symptoms are severe, endoscopy can diagnose
gastro-esophageal reflux disease along with a variety of other upper gastrointestinal disorders. The test involves
swallowing a small lighted tube to visualize the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Remember,
only a trained health care provider should diagnose acid reflux disease.
Colon
Your colon is part of the digestive system. Growths or inflammation within the colon can cause a serious problem.
Dr. Weston may also detect signs of trouble during a routine checkup. Symptoms may include rectal pain or bleeding,
diarrhea or constipation, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue. Colonoscopy is usually used to diagnose problems in
the colon or rectum. Depending on your colon problem, you may have laparoscopic or open surgery. Many times a larger
incision is needed to remove part of the colon. Dr. Weston or his nurses will give you bowel prep instructions and
timely scheduling of procedures. Don’t forget the importance of screening you and your family for colon cancer!
Rectum
All bleeding is not cancer! In fact, the most common cause is hemorrhoids. Everyone has them- you just don’t notice
them until they swell or bleed. They may cause pain, itching, burning, or bleeding. All kinds of people get them- don’t
be embarrassed. Once Dr. Weston confirms a diagnosis of bleeding or swollen hemorrhoids, you can explore together your
treatment options. Dr. Weston performs the PPH procedure for a great number of severely symptomatic patients. This is
a stapling procedure with less pain and less down time than old-fashioned hemorrhoid surgery.
